The newly appointed Commissioner of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Eunice Thomas, has promised to leverage her office to promote national unity and ensure equitable distribution of opportunities among Nigerians.
Speaking at her inaugural meeting with the staff of the Commission, Dr. Thomas emphasized the importance of implementing the Federal Character principles, saying, “If we try enough to implement the federal character principles, I think that Nigeria will be united because every Nigerian will be owning a piece of Nigeria.”
She also warned against vote buying and selling, stating, “The campaign will soon start, don’t buy and don’t sell votes or you will go to jail.” Dr. Thomas assured staff of the FCC of her commitment to improving their welfare and motivated them to deliver results, saying, “Your welfare is primary to me, I will make it my business to ensure that your welfare is improved.”
Dr. Thomas, who expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu , Senator Godswill Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno for her appointment, pledged to rebrand the FCC and restore trust among Nigerians. “We are going to rebrand the FCC and do our honest service to the people,” she said.
The new commissioner called on staff to be diligent and transparent, emphasizing that “the development of Nigeria is in this office, so every file that passes by your table holds the future, fate, and belief of a Nigerian.”
In his remarks, the State Director, Chukwudi Christopher, welcomed her with a heartfelt speech, praising her experience and influence.
Christopher, who was posted to Akwa Ibom just a week ago, shared how Thomas made him feel at home, saying, “, through your contact, I have been able to settle here without any stress. You are an asset to us here.”
The director also commended Thomas’ political track record, stating that the commission would leverage on her influence to overcome challenges. He pledged the staff’s loyalty, saying, “Our loyalty is not questionable; we are ready to work with you.”
One of the suggestions made by Christopher was the installation of a signage at the office to increase visibility, as many neighbors were unaware of the commission’s presence.
He expressed optimism that Thomas, who has served as a commissioner back-to-back in the state, is expected to bring her experience to bear in her new role.
Also speaking, the Director of Admin, Akpan James among other staff of the commission pledged their commitment to service and work towards the progress of the commission.
High point of the event was the presentation of commissioner’s portrait as a mark of honour.
