Former Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Colonel Yakubu Bako (Rtd), has described Governor Umo Eno as a unifying leader whose style of governance has brought together people across political divides in a manner unmatched by any previous administration in the state.
Bako, who governed Akwa Ibom between December 1993 and August 1996 during the administration of the late General Sani Abacha, made the remarks during an interview with journalists in Uyo on Saturday as part of activities marking the third anniversary of Governor Eno’s administration.
The retired army officer said the governor’s ability to attract support from members of opposing political parties demonstrates a rare commitment to inclusive leadership and the collective development of the state.
“The only governor so far that I have known in this state whose functions are attended by members of opposing political parties is Governor Umo Eno,” Bako said.
He added, “He introduced the PDP leader and even the running mate of the PDP governorship candidate at an event. That tells you the kind of leader he is. He is a unifier. No governor has done it the way he has.”
According to him, Governor Eno’s approach to governance has helped strengthen social cohesion and political stability in the state while sustaining ongoing development efforts.
Bako urged Akwa Ibom people to rally behind the governor and provide the support necessary for him to continue delivering democratic dividends.
“Akwa Ibom people should give Governor Umo Eno maximum support. Once you support a leader, you encourage him to do more. They should respect the governor and support his vision for the state,” he stated.
Reflecting on the state’s developmental journey, the former military administrator noted that Akwa Ibom had been fortunate to have successive leaders who built upon existing structures rather than abandoning projects initiated by their predecessors.
He commended the administration’s investment in infrastructure, tourism and human capital development, saying the state has become an attractive destination for visitors and investors.
“Before, nobody was coming to Uyo. Today, it has become a place people want to visit. Sometimes I meet people who come all the way from Abuja just to play golf here. That tells you how far the state has come,” he said.
While acknowledging the achievements recorded so far, Bako advised the governor to place greater emphasis on specialised human capital development.
“We are producing graduates, but there are specialised areas that require more attention. Human development should remain a priority because it is the foundation for long-term growth,” he added.
The former governor’s endorsement comes as Governor Eno’s administration marks three years in office amid growing discussions about the state’s development trajectory and future prospects.
