The Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation’s Oral Health Campaign Project reached out to 4 public Schools in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria in commemoration of the 2026 World Oral Health Day and week long activities.
The Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation, in collaboration with its partners including Hon. Mrs. Praise Otuekong Bassey (Supervisor for health, Uyo Local Government Area), successfully carried out oral health outreach across four public schools in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The outreach, held under the global theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” and was conducted in Community Secondary School, Ikot Oku Ikono, Qua Iboe Church Group School, Idoro, Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Okubo Offot, and Etoi Secondary School, Oron Road.
The initiative focused on promoting proper oral hygiene practices and raising awareness on the importance of maintaining good oral health as part of overall well-being. Students were educated on correct tooth brushing techniques, role of balanced nutrition, and the prevention of common oral diseases such as tooth decay and gum infections.
Speaking during the outreach, the state coordinator of the Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation, Mr Andikan Akpan, emphasized the importance of oral health education among young people.
“Oral health is often neglected, yet it plays a vital role in our daily lives. Through this outreach, we aim to instill lifelong healthy habits in students,” he stated.
Also speaking, Hon. Mrs. Praise Otuekong Bassey reiterated her commitment to supporting health-focused initiatives within the community stating that
“Investing in the health of our young people is investing in the future.” She further stated “We will continue to support programs that educate and empower students to make healthier choices.”
One of the school administrators, the principal general of community secondary school Ikot oku ikono; Mrs Imaobong Ikpe, expressed her appreciation to the Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation and its partners for the enlightenment and health education to the students.
The outreach was also graced with the presence of key government dignitaries and representatives such as the the Supervisor for Legislative Affairs, Hon. Ubong Utang; Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Joseph Nyong; Supervisor for Small Scale Business, Hon. Enoobong Bassey; and Supervisor for Agriculture, Hon. Nse Nyong.
Others in attendance were the Supervisor for Health, Uruan Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs Uduak Okon; Councillor representing Uyo Ward 12, Hon. Mrs Aniema Ndukeabasi; and Councillor representing Uyo Ward 5, Hon. Abasiama Okon.
Students who participated in the program expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as both enlightening and impactful. One student noted that the session improved their understanding of proper oral hygiene and daily dental care practices.
The outreach featured interactive sessions, practical demonstrations, and the distribution of Oral healthcare kits to staff and students.
The Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to improving community health through sustained awareness campaigns, particularly among young people, in line with global efforts to reduce the burden of preventable oral diseases.
