Amid solemn reflection and heartfelt tributes, children, family members, revered community leaders, and associates gathered to celebrate a life well lived, bidding farewell to their leader, father, and patriarch, Late Elder (Chief) Willie Esukuku Ekanim (Abu Afaha), who was laid to rest on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at his family compound in Afaha Atai, Eket LGA.
Fondly known as Ekman by friends and associates, the late patriarch was born on June 18, 1928, in Atung Ekanim, Afaha Atai. He passed on at the age of 97.
In a wave of glowing tributes, speakers described the deceased as a towering figure whose life journey embodied diligence, faith, and uncommon generosity.
Family members, church leaders, community stakeholders, and well-wishers were united in their reflections on a man deeply rooted in faith and committed to the service of God and humanity.
His children, speaking with emotion and pride, pledged to uphold and sustain the values and legacy he so firmly established.
“Our father, leader, and patriarch lived a life of humility, generosity, and unwavering devotion,” they noted. “He touched countless lives and laid a foundation of purpose and excellence that will continue to guide us. We are celebrating him not just for his accomplishments, but for the lives he shaped and uplifted “
Delivering the homily, the officiating minister, Rev. Ekpedeme Moffat Ibanga, General Superintendent and Conference Chairman, drew from 1 Kings 2:1–10 on the theme “Your Parting Gift To Your Family.” He reminded the congregation that a person’s true measure lies in what they leave behind.
“What you leave behind will define who you were and how you will be remembered,” he said, urging all present to live lives of purpose, integrity, and Christ-like example, as exemplified by the deceased.
The funeral service, conducted by the Qua Iboe Church, Afaha Atai, Afaha Ukwa Superintendency, Afaha Eket Area Conference, also featured excellence awards presented to the deceased’s children, honoring their selfless service and unwavering commitment to community development.
The ceremony attracted an array of dignitaries, including top traditional rulers, political figures, Staff of SEPLAT Energy, clergy, members of Mbong Ibaan Akwa Ibom State, women groups, youths, community leaders, and numerous well-wishers.
