For nearly four years, the people of Abak State Constituency have had every right to expect a visible legislative footprint from their representative. Bills, motions, co-sponsorship of progressive legislation, constituency advocacy and oversight reports and follow ups.
This right diminishes because rather than these responsibilities being seen as core mandates , they are seen as decorative aspects of the office. Not realizing that they are among the instruments through which a legislator can influence government and improve society, we are then left in the shambles of delusion.
Abak therefore deserves to ask a very important question about what kind of representative the constituency need for the next legislative cycle
The answer should not be about who merely wants the seat. It should be about who understands what the seat is for.Monday Dan who in all honesty is ready and willing is presenting himself as a prepared first-timer with fresh ideas, a clear understanding of legislative responsibilities and the willingness to put the office to work for the people.
Being a first-time legislator is not a disadvantage. In many instances, it is an advantage. It offers an opportunity to bring fresh perspectives to old problems, challenge archaic approaches and introduce ideas unencumbered by the limitations of the past. The legislature should not be seen or taken merely as a place to occupy seat. It is where the concerns of the people should be translated into bills, motions, advocacy and oversight capable of producing tangible change. A legislator is expected to interrogate policies, propose solutions, draw attention to urgent public concerns and use the powers of the office to advance the interests of the people.
While we have not had it recorded for our constituency that our representative have done so, this is the kind of representation Monday Dan is coming to alternate and give prepared and readymade solutionsfor Abak State Constituency.
The sponsorship of life-touching bills is one of the most important responsibilities of a legislator. A well-conceived bill can address a problem affecting thousands of people, create a lasting institutional framework and continue to impact lives long after its sponsor has left office. Motions of urgent public importance can similarly compel the attention of government to immediate challenges, while co-sponsoring progressive legislation allows lawmakers to lend their voices and influence to ideas that may originate from elsewhere.
To alleviate your fear on why a first timer should be given a shot, Akwa Ibom has witnessed examples of first-time lawmakers making meaningful legislative contributions. For example, The Administration of Criminal Justice Bill sponsored by then first-time lawmaker Aniefiok Dennis eventually became the Akwa Ibom Administration of Criminal Justice Law after Governor Udom Emmanuel assented to it in 2022. The law represented a significant legislative intervention in the administration of criminal justice in the state.
The Akwa Ibom State Security Trust Fund also provides another compelling example. The idea was conceived by Otobong Bob as a young, first-time legislator, subsequently passed through the legislative process and eventually became law after Governor Umo Eno assented to the bill in 2023. Today, the initiative provides a structured platform for mobilising resources to support security in the state.
These examples demonstrate an important truth that a legislator does not have to wait for a second term before making a meaningful legislative footprint. The first term can be the most consequential if the occupant of the office is prepared, innovative and genuinely committed to public service. For Monday Dan, his proposition becomes compelling and he is already steaming like an engine ready to bulldoze terrains.
At a time when constituents are increasingly demanding accountability from their representatives, Abak deserves a legislative voice that will actively participate in the business of lawmaking and representation. Monday Dan is prepared to sponsor legislation that responds to the realities of his people, support and co-sponsor progressive bills, raise motions on matters of urgent public importance and advocate persistently for issues affecting Abak and Akwa Ibom State.
He understands that effective representation also requires robust oversight.
Critical roads, schools, healthcare facilities, water projects and other public infrastructure within the constituency deserve legislative attention and follow-up. Where necessary, Monday Dan will engage the relevant ministries, departments and agencies, undertake oversight visits and negotiate for interventions that will produce measurable benefits for the people.
The essence of legislative representation is to speak with purpose, propose solutions, pursue implementation and remain accountable to the people, these and many more, Monday Dan will do.
