The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Professor Otoabasi Akpan, says the institution is determined to promote research programmes that will add significant value to the State and also explore opportunities that abound in the Arise Agenda of the present administration.
Professor Akpan made the pledge at an interactive session with newsmen at the 5th International Conference of Association of Nigeria Public Administrators (ANPA) held in Uyo recently.
The historian emphasized the need for the three-helix model of societal development, which requires research institutes, policy makers, and industry stakeholders from all sectors to collaborate for the benefit of society.
Akpan, the current President of the College of Professors in Nigeria (CoPIN), reiterated the importance of funding research that follows a clear roadmap in key thematic areas of the economy. He stated that this is essential for addressing the developmental challenges facing the nation.
On efforts to transform Akwa Ibom State University into a research hub in sub-Saharan Africa, Professor Akpan hinted that plans have been finalized to establish research centers and institutes that will focus solely on the core challenges affecting various sectors of the state’s economy.
He noted that knowledgeable scholars have been selected to lead the center and will work effectively to ensure that the centers and research institutes align their programs and activities with the Arise Agenda of Pastor Umo Eno’s administration.
Concerned about graduates struggling to align their qualifications with the practical skills needed to address societal challenges and secure employment, Professor Akpan announced that the institution has established a program that would ensure every student acquires at least one skill set before graduating from the university.
He lauded the state Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his determination to see Akwa Ibom State University move from the 23rd ranking to the top 10 ranking of Nigerian Universities within a short term of five (5) years, promising to work assiduously to meet the expectations of the university community and Akwa Ibom people by extension.
