The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue service, Sir Okon Okon has explained that the Nigeria tax law as brought to Nigeria by colonial masters became archaic and stale and there was need for a reform to align the tav system of Nigeria to the contemporary economy.
Okon made the disclosure during the new year Solemn Assembly of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Uyo and District Society held on Wednesday, 14 January, 2026 at the office of the Accountant General Hall Uyo.
Okon who spoke on the sub theme * Nigeria Tax Reforms: Synopsis of the implications ” said the new tax regime law will reduce tax burden on citizens, particularly the low income earners and small businesses as it will checkmate multiple taxation and nuisance taxes
He further clarified that the Reforms has not introduced new taxes but focus on improving administrative efficiency, simplifying compliance for individuals and coordinations and boost revenue generation across all tiers of government.
He further explained that the national tax reform has 0% VAT on food commodities, healthcare, education, rent and transport to improve the living standards of citizens.
He said that the reform system would be more efficient and transparent, thereby encourage public trust on tax administration.
Okon commended the the State governor, Pastor Umo Eno for implementing the single Treasury Account Policy which he said would improve revenue accountability in the State.
Earlier, the accountant General of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Uwem Essien in his homily enjoined members of CITN to maintain positive attitude , by being conscious of God when facing challenges, knowing full well that God never fails.
Pastor Essien who was represented by Director of the Funds Directorate, Accountant General Office, Mr Mfon Udomah preached on the topic ” maintaining a positive attitude to explore 2026″ drawn his message from Psalm 44:1-4.

In her opening remark, The Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Uyo and District Society, Dcns Idorenyin William, has expressed confidence that the ongoing national tax reforms will deliver substantial benefits to citizens and strengthen Nigeria’s tax system. She made this assertion during the New Year Solemn Assembly of the Institute held on Wednesday in Uyo, where she welcomed members and emphasised the need for spiritual rededication, professional discipline, and continuous capacity development in the new year.
Deaconess William also commended the State Accountant General, Pastor Uwem Andrew-Essien, and the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS), Sir Okon Okon, for their consistent support of the District Society’s programmes and activities, noting that such collaboration remains vital to advancing the objectives of the tax profession.
The Solemn Assembly, which featured praise, worship, and prayers for members and the nation, marked the commencement of the District Society’s activities for the 2026 year.
