The Director of the Agency for Adult and Non‑Formal Education, Mr Selong Edem, has pledged to support the expansion of educational programmes and the provision of modern learning resources at both institutions.
Mr Edem carried out a full‑day tour of the Women Model Education Center and the Adult Education Centre today, 20 November 2025. He was accompanied by senior officials of the Agency and was guided through the campuses by the principals of both schools, who also introduced him to a vibrant gathering of students eager to showcase their work.
In a brief address to the assembled learners, Director Edem reiterated the agency’s commitment to building a literate, self‑reliant school where every woman can shape her destiny. He highlighted that education is not a privilege; it is a catalyst for community transformation, urging students to stay steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge.
He expressed gratitude for the principals’ hands‑on approach, noting that the tour had already energized staff and students alike and inspired them to pursue excellence.
During the walk‑through, Mrs Imelda Ekpo, Principal of the Women Model Education Center, outlined two key challenges: many students enroll only to disappear before completing their courses, and repeated vandalism of copper wiring that disrupts essential facilities.
Mrs Ekaette Obot, Principal of the Adult Education Center, added that the centre urgently needs more facilitators from the Local Government Areas in order to provide motivation and sustainable support for the students.
To address these issues, Mr Edem promised to present their request to the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, for further necessary action.
The tour took the Director and his heads of departments through bright, well‑ventilated classrooms, a modest hair‑dressing centre, and a thriving catering kitchen where learners practice culinary skills alongside agricultural projects.
The visit concluded with a shared encouragement for continued growth and provision. Students and staff alike felt a renewed sense of purpose, buoyed by the knowledge that their efforts are recognized and will be supported at the highest level.
