In commemoration of the 2025 World Stroke Awareness Day, Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation organized a free medical outreach program on Tuesday, 28th October, 2025 at Ikot Oku community, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, aimed at promoting stroke awareness, prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyle practices within the community.
World Stroke Awareness Day, observed annually on October 29, highlights the global burden of stroke and encourages collective efforts toward prevention and rehabilitation.
The community chairman, Mr Bokime Effiong and his executive members warmly received the medical team and appreciated the foundation for extending such selfless service to their community.
The event was flagged off by the wife of the Uyo Local Government Area, Mrs Akaninyene Uwemedimo Udo as represented by the Honourable Supervisor for Health, Uyo Local Government Area, Hon. Praise Otuekong who commended the foundation and prayed that the initiative brings healing, comfort, and renewed hope to the good people of Ikot Oku community.
The outreach, themed “EVERY MINUTE COUNTS” drew an impressive turnout of hundreds of residents despite the rain who benefited from free health screenings, medical consultations, and educational sessions on signs and symptoms, risk factors, preventive measures and management of stroke.
Participants received free medications, blood pressure checks, blood sugar tests, Body Mass Index assessments, counseling on nutrition, exercise, and the dangers of smoking and excessive alcohol intake.
Speaking at the event, Nurse Abasiama Samuel Obot and other health practitioners emphasized the importance of early detection in reducing stroke-related deaths and disabilities. “Stroke is largely preventable especially when people are aware of the warning signs and take proactive steps to maintain healthy lifestyles. This outreach is part of our commitment to saving lives through health education and preventive care,” she said.
Several beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the initiative.
