…NUJ Chairman Urges Parents to Build Courage and Safe Spaces for Children

In a bid to strengthen awareness and promote the protection of children from all forms of sexual abuse, the Passionate Young Leaders Initiative (PYLI) on Thursday held a one-day advocacy campaign themed “Safe, Bold and Moral: Raising a Courageous Generation.”

Speaking at the event, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John , emphasized the importance of early education and open communication in combating child sexual abuse and enhancing safety of the Children.

Represented by Comrade Idorenyin Nkop, the Financial Secretary of the Federated Chapel, the NUJ Boss stressed the need to raise children who are aware of their rights and confident enough to speak up against any form of molestation or abuse.

Comrade John explained that parents and guardians hold a critical responsibility in preventing abuse by fostering open dialogue with their children. He further advised that children should be encouraged to share their experiences without fear of blame or punishment, as this builds trust and enables timely intervention when abuse occurs.

“Many children suffer in silence because they fear that their parents will not believe them or may scold them. Parents must be attentive, listen with empathy, and observe behavioral changes that may indicate distress,” he added.

Other speakers at the event stressed that knowledge remains one of the most effective tools in preventing sexual exploitation and called on schools and community leaders to prioritize continuous sensitization on the subject.
