The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, have praised Governor Umo Eno for doctors’ and other healthcare workers’ welfare. The NMA’s recognition of the governor’s efforts in appreciating the economic contributions of doctors was conveyed in a communiqué to mark the commencement of the 2025 National Physicians’ Week.
The Chairman of the NMA, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Dr Aniekan Imo Peter, opined that the physicians’ week is about celebrating excellence in healthcare.
The chairman stated that the week is aimed at celebrating the role physicians play in maintaining the health and well-being of communities, adding that their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional care have an impact on the lives of their patients.
“In the communique, we expressed our gratitude to the governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, for the new welfare package for medical doctors and other health care workers in the state.
The National Physicians Week, celebrated every October in Nigeria, is a time to honour and appreciate the tireless efforts of physicians in caring for others. It is a reminder of the crucial role that physicians play in maintaining the health and well-being of our communities. Their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional care have a profound impact on the lives of their patients.
“Unfortunately, in Nigeria, the work of physicians is often undervalued and underappreciated. Many doctors are overworked, with long hours and large patient loads. This takes a toll on their physical and mental well-being, leading to burnout and exhaustion. It is a common sight to see doctors working without breaks, often skipping meals. Yet, they continue to serve with passion and selflessness.
“The NMA AKS wish to highlight the harsh reality of the work conditions for Nigerian doctors. While a doctor in a developed country may see 20 patients in a day, in Nigeria, it is not uncommon for a doctor to see above 60 patients in a busy clinic. This is a testament to the resilience and dedication of Nigerian doctors who continue to serve despite the challenging circumstances,” he said.
According to him, in the face of those challenges, Eno has shown appreciation and support for the medical community. He noted that the new welfare package is a much-needed boost for medical doctors and other healthcare workers who have been struggling with inadequate compensation for their hard work.
Describing the governor’s gesture as a commendable step towards valuing the contributions of physicians and uplifting the healthcare sector in the state, they (the doctors) urged the Federal Government to emulate the progressive gesture without delay and prevent national industrial disputes.
He said, “As we celebrate National Physicians Week, let us take the time to thank the physicians in our lives for their dedication and hard work. It is also an opportunity to share our personal stories of how a physician has made a positive impact on our lives.

We commend the governor, His Excellency Pastor Umoh Bassey Eno, PhD, for his passion and vigour in his pursuit of the implementation of the Arise Agenda as it affects the health sector in the state, as follows: Revolution in Primary healthcare;
The NMA listed other achievements in the state to include Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Agency, Akwa Ibom State Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance Systems (AKISEMSAS); construction of oxygen plants; construction of the New General Hospital at Ukanafun; renovation of the Accident and Emergency Unit at the General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene; Establishment of a renal centre at Ikot Ekpene; approval for the recruitment of 2000 health professionals into the health sector, and 900 contract appointments.
The association also mentioned the renovation and upgrade of the Ibom Airport Clinic to international standards, and the recent declaration of the state of emergency in the health sector in the state.
Meanwhile, Peter said the association would include feature awards to dedicated physicians for the period. He added that the awards, which are in seven categories, include Doctor of the Year; Consultant of the Year, for a consultant who has demonstrated exceptional clinical skill, mentorship, and professional leadership; Resident Doctor of the Year, among others.
