WHEN HONOUR COMES HOME: THE QUIET TRIUMPH OF ENGR. UBONG ISRAEL UBOH

In every generation, the society produces two kinds of successful people. The first are those who spend their lives announcing their achievements and ensure that every little accomplishment is amplified for public consumption. The second are those who quietly go about their businesses and allow their work to become their loudest voice. Engr. Ubong Israel Uboh belongs unmistakably to the latter category.

It was therefore both fitting and gratifying that the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abak Branch, honoured him during its 2026 Engineering Week that culminated in the Induction and Award Ceremony held on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The Human Capacity/Community Service Award presented to him was more than another plaque to decorate an office wall. It was a profound acknowledgement by his professional colleagues who understand the demands of Engineering and who recognized that beyond technical competence lies an even greater responsibility which includes the capacity to improve human lives.

Recognition is one of oldest aspirations of humanity. Every individual believes that somewhere along the journey, those who witnessed the sacrifices will also acknowledge the results. Even the Holy Bible records that Jesus Christ lamented the reluctance of people to honour a Prophet in his own land. That timeless lesson reminds us that appreciation from your own Community carries a unique emotional value because it comes from people who know the story behind the success.
For Engr. Uboh, this honour carried exactly that meaning.

The event itself reflected the growing prestige of the engineering profession within the Abak enclave. The presence of the National President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ali Alimaisuya Rabiu alongside the Chairman of the Abak Branch, Engr. Nsikak Akpan and an array of distinguished guests from across Nigeria transformed the ceremony into a colourful gathering of accomplished professionals united by a common vision.

Yet beyond the elegance of the occasion and the exchange of warm greetings was a deeper message. When professionals from one Community come together under a common banner, they send a powerful signal that excellence thrives where unity exists. The Engineers of Abak contraption demonstrated that they are determined to occupy their rightful place in the technological and industrial advancement of Nigeria. They understand that no society develops by accident. Progress is built by men and women who combine knowledge with service. Engr. Uboh has become one of those builders.

His story is not merely one of personal success. It is the story of a young man from Abak Itenge Village who chose to venture into one of the most demanding sectors in Nigeria and succeeded where many believed indigenous participation would remain minimal.
From earning his National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Afikpo to obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Mining and Geology from Nasarawa State University Keffi, he steadily prepared himself for opportunities that lay beyond the horizon.
Today, he is widely acknowledged as the first indigenous Mining Engineer from Abak Local Government Area, a distinction that has made him a trailblazer and an inspiration to countless young professionals.

As Managing Director of Arittgray Nigeria Limited, Engr. Uboh has transformed vision into enterprise. His company has emerged as one of the leading indigenous mining operators in Cross River State, managing more than 1,300 cadastral units of mineral assets across Nigeria. Through extensive geophysical and aeromagnetic studies, strategic exploration and unwavering compliance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, the company has established itself as a trusted player within the solid minerals industry of the nation.
Its supply of barite to international oil companies has contributed directly to the local content policy of Nigeria while at the same time reducing dependence on imported materials for oil drilling operations. Equally significant is the consistent payment of statutory royalties to the Federal Government by the company which is a demonstration that responsible business and profitability can indeed coexist.
But perhaps the most enduring legacy of Engr. Uboh cannot be measured by mineral reserves or corporate balance sheets. It is measured by people.

More than ten thousand direct and indirect employment opportunities have emerged through his mining operations in Cross River State. Behind each job is a family whose economic story has changed. Behind every salary is a child who can return to school, a parent who can afford healthcare and a household that has rediscovered hope.

His commitment to community development has been equally remarkable. Fifty solar powered boreholes now provide clean drinking water to rural communities. Four hundred solar street lights have improved security and extended commercial activities after dark. Community access roads have received remedial attention to facilitate transportation and economic activities. Every year, eighty University students pursuing Engineering and other STEM disciplines benefit from scholarships funded by him just to ensure that the next generation has opportunities where many before them could only dream of.
His passion for development does not end with mining.

Through Duna Palm Empire Limited, Engr. Uboh has become a major player in the agricultural transformation of Akwa Ibom State. By introducing improved Malaysian oil palm seedlings, establishing over ten thousand stands of improved oil palm, developing the largest commercial ginger farm in the State, expanding into sand dredging and creating more than eight hundred additional jobs, he has demonstrated that agriculture remains one of the most sustainable pathways to economic prosperity.
His ongoing investment in what promises to become the first vegetable oil refinery in Abak represents another bold step toward industrialization. Instead of exporting raw produce and importing finished products, the refinery will encourage value addition, create employment, strengthen food security and stimulate local enterprise.

Beyond business lies another side of the man. Through the Rapid Rescue Empowerment Foundation, he has extended compassion to widows, orphans, vulnerable children, persons living with disabilities and the elderly. It is a reminder that genuine success is not measured solely by the wealth one accumulates but by the number of lives one uplifts.

That perhaps explains why the Human Capacity Development Award feels so appropriate.
It recognizes a man who understands that Engineering is not merely about steel, concrete, machines or minerals. At its highest level, Engineering is about solving human problems. It is about creating opportunities where none existed, improving living conditions and leaving communities better than they were found.
In a country where many young people seek examples worthy of emulation, Engr. Ubong Israel Uboh offers an inspiring template. He has shown that integrity still matters, that quiet diligence still earns respect and that true leadership is not expressed by the volume of a voice but by the depth of an impact.

As the applause echoed through the hall and the evening gradually came to an end, one could not help but reflect that the award was not simply a celebration of past accomplishments. It was an affirmation that service, excellence and humanity remain timeless virtues.
For Engr. Uboh, this honour is neither the beginning nor the end of the journey. It is another reminder that when dedication meets purpose, recognition becomes inevitable.

Some people build companies while others build careers. The exceptional few build people, communities and hope.
That is the legacy Engr. Ubong Israel Uboh is steadily constructing. ONE PROJECT, ONE OPPORTUNITY AND ONE TRANSFORMED LIFE at a time.
