The story of Elder Tom Paul Etuk cannot be fully told without tracing the remarkable spiritual heritage from which he emerged, the historic Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Ikot Akpan Eda District Headquarters, a church whose roots are deeply woven into the history of Christianity in Akwa Ibom, Cross River and the old Eastern Nigeria.
For decades, CAC Ikot Akpan Eda has stood not only as a place of worship, but as a symbol of revival, sacrifice and unwavering faith in God. It is from this spiritually rich environment that Elder Tom Paul Etuk drew the values of perseverance, discipline and trust in divine providence that shaped his life journey.
Born on February 2, 1966, at Ikot Akpan Eda in Oruk-Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Elder Tom Paul Etuk was raised in a family whose history was closely connected to the establishment and growth of the Church. His father, Late Mr. Sunday Udo Etuk, was among the early converts and foundational figures through whom the gospel flourished in the community.
The history of the Church dates back to the early 1940s when a wave of revival swept through Ikot Akpan Eda, a community then deeply rooted in traditional worship. The revival was sparked by miraculous healings and supernatural encounters that turned the hearts of many people toward *the only true *God**
One of the most remarkable testimonies was the healing of Mr. Sunday Udo Etuk, who had suffered from a mysterious illness locally described as owoho. After several failed traditional and Western treatments, he was taken to Ikot Umiang Ede in present-day Etinan Local Government Area for prayers. After an intense 14 days prayers and fasting sessions led by Prophet S. J. Ekaette of Ikot Edor in ONNA, he was miraculously healed.
Following the healing, Prophet Ekaette declared that God wanted a church established in Ikot Akpan Eda as a sign of gratitude and a centre for the propagation of the gospel. In obedience to this divine instruction, Pa Paul Etuk Akpan opened a prayer house within his family compound, thereby laying the foundation for what would later become Christ Apostolic Church, Ikot Akpan Eda District Headquarters.
The revival gained further momentum through another miraculous testimony, the deliverance of Madam Esther Tom Paul, wife of Sunday Udo Etuk, from decades of barrenness. During a fasting and prayer session also led by Prophet Ekaette , a mysterious ring reportedly fell off her finger, after which she conceived and later gave birth to a son. The miracle strengthened the faith of many villagers, leading to mass conversions from traditional worship to Christianity.
Another defining moment came through the healing of Mr. Brownson Udo Etuk, brother to Sunday Udo Etuk, who suffered partial blindness after a palm tree accident. After his healing, he abandoned his bicycle parts business in obedience to God’s call and later became the first ordained pastor of the Church in Ikot Akpan Eda.
As signs and wonders continued, the prayer house rapidly expanded, attracting converts from different communities. Consequently, distinguished church pioneers, including Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola and Prophet S. J. Ekaette, named the prayer house as Christ Apostolic Church in the early 40s . From Ikot Akpan Eda, the gospel spread to several parts of Eastern Nigeria, including Calabar, Eket, Oron, Ikot Abasi, Abak and Mkpat Enin.
Today, the Church stands as one of the oldest and most influential apostolic movements in the region. This historic apostolic movement that has transformed the lives of thousands of people from generation to generation has been carefully captured in a book titled, “The History of Christ Apostolic Church, Ikot Akpan Eda District Headquarters” written by Elder Tom Paul Etuk and scheduled for public presentation on Sunday, 24th May, 2026 in Ikot Akpan Eda, Ekparakwa clan, Oruk-Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
What began as a prayer house in a family compound has now been transformed into a magnificent cathedral and a District Headquarters of the Eti-Mbuk District Coordinating Council of Christ Apostolic Church. It was within this environment of faith, revival and sacrifice that Elder Tom Paul Etuk grew up. Though his upbringing was filled with hardship, the spiritual foundation laid by his family and the Church sustained him through difficult times.
After losing his father at a young age, he undertook several menial jobs, including fishing, basket weaving, bush clearing and palm fruit harvesting, to support his family and pursue education. At one point, economic hardship forced him into an orphanage, but he later left, convinced that his destiny could not be fulfilled there.
His determination eventually led him through academic and professional success. He attended Ekparakwa No. 1 Primary School and later Ikot Okoro Secondary School before obtaining a Nigerian Certificate in Education from the University of Cross River State, Uyo. He subsequently earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Uyo in 1994 and later obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Yet, graduation did not immediately bring relief. Like many Nigerian youths, Elder Etuk endured years of unemployment, rejection and humiliation. He survived through odd jobs in Abuja markets, including pushing wheelbarrows and petty trading. At different times, he faced wrongful arrest and lost employment opportunities due to circumstances beyond his control.
Despite these painful experiences, he remained steadfast in faith, refusing to compromise his values or seek ungodly shortcuts. His resilience and dedication eventually attracted destiny helpers, including former Deputy Senate Chief Whip, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, who became one of his mentors.
In 2002, Elder Tom Paul Etuk joined the National Assembly Service Commission, Abuja, where he rose through the ranks to become a Director before his retirement in 2026. Throughout his career, he served in several strategic departments of the Commission and distinguished himself through diligence, integrity and commitment to service.
A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria and the Certified Board Administrators of Nigeria, Elder Etuk also attended several professional and management courses within and outside Nigeria. Indeed, the story of Elder Tom Paul Etuk mirrors the very history of Christ Apostolic Church, Ikot Akpan Eda, a story of humble beginnings, unwavering faith, sacrifice, divine grace and ultimate triumph.
As the Church continues to stand tall as a spiritual beacon in Eastern Nigeria, the life of Elder Tom Paul Etuk remains a living testimony that faith in God, resilience in adversity and dedication to service can transform even the most difficult beginnings into enduring legacies.
