In commemoration of the 2026 World Malaria Day, the Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation, in partnership with the Uyo Local Government Council through the Office of the Honourable Supervisor for Health, Hon. Praise Otuekong Bassey, successfully organized a community health outreach aimed at combating malaria and promoting general wellbeing.
The event, held at the Primary Health Centre, Operational Base, Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, attracted a wide range of stakeholders, community members, and government officials, all united under the global theme: “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must.”
The outreach featured several impactful health services, including free malaria testing and counselling, blood pressure checks, and comprehensive health talks focused on prevention and early treatment of malaria. In addition, antimalarial medications and insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed to participants to support sustained malaria prevention at the household level.
Speaking at the event, the state cordinator of the foundation (Mr Andikan Sampson Akpan) emphasized the importance of community-based interventions in reducing the burden of malaria, particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and children.
The program was graced by notable dignitaries, including the Wife of the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr. Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo; the Head of Service, Uyo Local Government; the Women Development Officer; and the Director of Nursing Services of the Local Government. Also present were Uyo Local Government Council Supervisors led by Mr. Joseph Nyong, Supervisor for Environment, as well as aides to the Governor led by Mr. Joe Brown, the APC Chapter Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, and other distinguished guests.
Their presence underscored the collaborative commitment of government and non-governmental organizations toward improving healthcare delivery and eliminating malaria in the region.
The outreach concluded with renewed calls for sustained awareness, environmental sanitation, and the consistent use of preventive tools such as insecticide-treated nets. Organizers expressed optimism that continued partnerships and grassroots engagement will significantly reduce malaria prevalence in Uyo and beyond.
The Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation reaffirmed its dedication to advancing accessible healthcare services and strengthening public health awareness across communities.
